چکیده

We tested the hypothesis that winter removal rates of h i t s of wax myrtle, ~Vfjricu cerifern, are higher in colder winters. Over a 9-year period, we monitored M. cerifkru fruit crops in 13 0.1-ha study plots in South Carolina, U.S.A. Peak ripeness occurred in November, whereas peak removal occurred in the coldest months, December and January. Mean time to fruit removal within study plots was positively correlated with mean winter temperatures, thereby supporting our hypothesis. This result, combined with the generally low availability of winter arthropods, suggests that fruit abundance may play a role in determining winter survivorship and distribution of permanent resident and short-distance migrant birds. Fleshy Fruit Removal and Nutritional Composition of Winter-fruiting Plants: a Comparison of Non-native Invasive and Native Species

3 Corresponding author: [email protected]; 828-667-5261 ext. 118; Fax: 828-667-9097 ABSTRACT: Invasive, non-native plants threaten forest ecosystems by reducing native plant species richness and potentially altering ecosystem processes. Seed dispersal is critical for successful invasion and range expansion by non-native plants; dispersal is likely to be enhanced if they can successfully comp...

Does Day Length Affect Winter Bird Distribution? Testing the Role of an Elusive Variable

Differences in day length may act as a critical factor in bird biology by introducing time constraints in energy acquisition during winter. Thus, differences in day length might operate as a main determinant of bird abundance along latitudinal gradients. This work examines the influence of day length on the abundance of wintering crested tits (Lophophanes cristatus) in 26 localities of Spanish ...

Winter Cold Tolerance in Cherry (Prunus avium) and Its Association with Electrical Conductivity and a Number of Morphological Traits

Winter cold is a significant damaging factor in fruit trees specially stone fruits. Relative resistance of 20 local and introduced sweet cherries (Prunus avium) to winter cold in artificial cold condition and its association with electrical conductivity and a number of morphological traits including trunk diameter, shoot diameter, anthocyanine and lenticels frequencies was studied in year 2011....

An Investigation of Cold Tolerance on Chemical Properties (Proline, Protein, and Sugar) of the Flower Buds in Four Commercial Cultivars of Damghan Local Pistachio

Temperature reduction in early spring, especially corporate with buds swelling, sometimes causes severe damages. Most of the fruit trees in tropical and semi-tropical regions, especially in more critical conditions, moderate, at early spring are subjected to the frostbite and winter cold injuries. This study aimed to evaluate the amount of proline, total protein, and soluble sugars during the p...

Food Preferences of Winter Bird Communities in Different Forest Types

Food availability for forest birds is a function of habitat type, forest management regime, and season. In winter, it is also impacted by variations in the weather. In the current study we assessed the food preferences of wild bird populations in two types of forest (spruce and beech) during the months of November 2010 to April 2011 in the Schwäbische Alb Biodiversity Exploratory, south-western...
